Gladstone refuse de soutenir la cause des Juifs de Roumanie

Lettre manuscrite de William Gladstone à Mr(Leorter, Leake ?) concernant la situation des Juifs de Roumanie qui lui demandent son intervention et son aide. Lettre datée deu 17 décembre 1879 On lui demande d'intervenir pour les Juifs du Levant. Mais les Juifs d'Allemagne et d'ailleurs soutiennent les oppresseurs turcs sans égard pour l'égalité civile des populations, le droit à la sécurité, à la propriété et l'honneur des femmes. Il s'en prend aux Juifs de Sheffield. Il lui est difficile de réclamer l'égalité civile pour les Juifs de Roumanie, de Bulgarie et de Serbie si dans le même temps les Juifs de Sheffield adoptent une attitude contraire aux droits des peuples de ces contrées. “I had, on various occasion publicly recommended the conclusion of a complete civil equality to the Jews, but there [is] a great difficulty in the way...” He describes the rumors he has heard of the efforts of the Jews of Sheffield to oppose the calls of the Christians of the East upon the English Government to offer them refuge during the prolonged crisis in the Balkan Peninsular:“...you know what human nature is. And I would ask you, whether there is much use in my writing to the East to ask for civil equality for the Jews of Rumania or Bulgaria or Serbia, if the same part perhaps, carries an account that the Jews of Sheffield are in active opposition to what the inhabitants of those countries deem to be their primary and vital interests.”

Lettre écrite alors que Gladstone, qui sera 4 fois 1°Ministre est dans l'opposition à Disraeli; il redeviendra Premier Ministre en 1881. Il a publié en 1876 un pamphlet "The bulgarian horrors and the question of the East" dans lequel il préconise l'expulsion des Turcs d'Europe et une alliance de l'Angleterre avec la Russie pour protéger les minorités chrétiennes. "The conflict brought out all of the latent anti-jewish feeling of which even Gladstone, amazing though it may appear, was not wholly able to rid himself. He grumbled to the Duke of Argyll that "I have a strong suspicion that Dizzy's cryptojudaism has to do with his policy ; the jews of the east bitterly hate the christians who have not always used them well" ( .. ) When a certain Jew of liberal political sympathies, one L.Gluckstein, sent him in 1876 a copy of a pamphlet he had writen on the position of the jews in the East, the Liberal leader acknowledged it ( . ) : "I have always had occasion to admire the conduct otf the english jews in the discharge of their civil duties ; but i deeply deplore the manner in which, what i may call judaic sympathies , beyond as well as within the circle of professed judaism, are now acting on the question of the East." Depuis juillet 1879, les expulsions de juifs de Roumanie se multiplient ; en décembre, une loi, contraire au traité de Berlin de 1878, considère les Juifs roumains comme des étrangers. He was out-spoken on the topic of Turkish irregularities in the Balkan Peninsular in 1875-76.
