La photographie saisit David Sassoon ( 1792_1864) dans son costume irakien qu'il porte à BOMBAY où il est établi depuis 1832.
Dans son livre " A History of a jewish costume" Rubens reproduit dans le chapitre consacré à l'Inde (p78) une gravure de David Sassoon arborant un autre costume oriental. Comment cette représentation prise autour de 1864 et faisant partie de sa collection personnelle, Rubens indique: "The Baghdadi Jews, some of whom came from other part of the Levant besides Baghdad whore the Turkish djubba and entari with a turban. They all had long rounded beards."
Surnommé le Rothschild de l'Orient , Sasson cultive ainsi sa différence , notamment vis à vis des Juifs indiens (Bné Israel)
Sa fortune est immense , il est un des hommes les plus riche de son temps. Selon le Tata Institute:"By the end of the 1850'it was said of him that "silver and gold, silks , gums and spices, opium and cotton, wool and wheat, whatever moves over sea or land feels the hand or bears the mark of Sassoon and compagny;"
Il a des établissements en Inde( Calcuta , Karachi), en Chine ( Hong Kong, 1843), Canton, Shanghai,(1845), Hangkow , au Japon ( Kobe,Nagasaki, Yokohama) en Irak ( Bagdad), en Grande Bretagne ( Londres, Manchester)
Il est grand philantrophe, notamment vis à vis des communautés juives indiennes. A Bombay et à Pune, sa ville de résidence, il finance des hopitaux , des écoles , des musées et synagogues
